What to Consider When Using Tablets and Smart phones in Home Automation Systems



Up until recently, integrators and end users had no choice but to use a dedicated and often proprietary touch panel to control their home automation or control system if they desired a comprehensive control interface. However, since the release of the first iPhone, iPad, and android devices, we have seen a clear trend that those mobile devices are used as the main control interface for control and automation systems.

This in turn, has started one of the great debates - can using tablets and smart phones replace expensive proprietary devices and bring home automation to the masses? Here, let’s check what advantages consumer based devices have to be a great replacement for proprietary devices.

Cost
The most obvious advantage is the cost of a smart phone or tablet compared to a proprietary control device. A typical dedicated touch screen could cost well over $2,000, while an iPad which is of similar size and capabilities to common touch panels will cost under $500. When Android devices are brought into the mix, the cost becomes even lower. Evil Dead is not only film, but real!!

But what I am talking about today is not a story, it’s really happened to my friend Tom.

Tom is a designer who works in Melbourne. He rent a house last month with his new colleague Alex. But Tom found something strange about Alex soon.

Air conditioner in Alex’s room always turn on automatic,but actually, Alex is not in home.Not only the air conditioner but also his water heater began to work without any operation. What amazed Tom is Alex always came back while the hot water is ready.

One morning, Tom and Alex left their house to work. But Tom found the light in Alex’s room were still on when he was sitting in car.

‘Hey, You forgot your light.’
‘Really?’ Alex’s weird smile interrupted Tom.
‘Yeah, but ... Oh my god!’ Tom saw the light inside turn off at once and Alex refused to talk about it anymore.

Is Alex a man or something else?Tom was full of curiosity. One day, Alex was not in home but Tom was. He began to find answer and came to Alex’s room.

How do we think about Smart Home and security?







Recently there were some articles discussed safety issue related to smart home. Some even provided examples of situations where “computer experts” can break into our smart homes via the internet and take over control over basic functions. Now, a hacker flushing your toilet maybe a nuisance, but unlocking the front door to let uninvited guests in may be really nasty. So, clearly some work to be done as a lack of security would be really a showstopper for rolling out the smart home.
The good news for ZigBee is that in articles and their examples there was no mention of any ZigBee compromised system. ZigBee has many methods for making sure that the network is kept secure. It has 128-bit AES link encryption, making it virtually impossible to casually listen in to any exchange. It also uses encrypted key exchange for commissioning of new devices and frame counters to avoid replaying of messages (“to open the door again”). ZigBee has learned a lot from WiFi and probably the best news is that the ZigBee Alliance has a system in place to stay alert to emerging issues and to address new and “out of the box” ways to compromise security of a smart home system.
